When Calgary was unable to secure an arena deal during the founding of the WHA, Cleveland stepped up and the Crusaders played from 1972 to 1976. While they were competitive on the ice fans were not eager for the long drive to the arena and owners did not want to compete once news the Golden Seals were relocating to Cleveland.
